Compton Abbas airfield plan,2001.~
Compton Abbas airfield,situated about 2.7 miles south of Shaftesbury,is one of the highest airfields in England at 812 ft ASL.It is the only general aviation field in the county of Dorset(Hurn is these days an"International Airport" and Henstridge is just over the county line in Somerset)The airfield was started by the Shaftesbury Flying Club in May 1962,and during the following 15 years,the site was gradually developed into an attractive G.A. airfield with good facilities.Today,the airfield,which is open all year round from 0900 to Dusk,is a very active place ,and during the summer is a popular destination for light aircraft.
