Lat/Long: 504140N/022030W.Grid ref SY765885. 203 feet ASL.IDENT "XW".USAAF Station 454.(1944 RT callsign "Kingsroad")

RUNWAYS:Grass: NE-SW 900 yds,NW-SE 900 yds,WNW-ESE 1680yds.

WARMWELL:Opened for use by the RAF in May 1937,was originally called RAF Woodsford. The station was initially home to the 6 Armament Training Camp. The name was changed in July 1938,possibly to avoid confusion as there were already other airfields(in use or in the planning stage) with names beginning with "Wood".Initially used by Flying Training Command ,control passed to 10 Group Fighter Command in July 1940 and Warmwell became a satellite of Middle Wallop.Throughout the War ,flying units were predominantly RAF fighter units(see list below). However the USAAF used Warmwell on two occasions,in 1942 and again during the D-Day period in 1944.With the end of the war the station was very quickly run down with the last unit leaving in September 1945,and the airfield closed officially in November 1945.Today the airfield has been turned into a large gravel pit with very little left to show its existence.Of note is the fact that immediately to the north is the site of the WW1 Moreton Admiralty Airship Station.

War Memorial at Warmwell
This picture, contributed by Andrew Potter, belonged to his mother who as Miss Muriel Dora Baxter(see photo below) served in the WAAF and was attached to 234 Squadron at Warmwell in 1941. All that is known about the photo(dated 1941) is that the man 2nd from the right was named Dennis (first name) and that he drove a fuel tanker .
